Self Care Sunday: Essential Tips to Relax This Weekend

Your week can be long and exhausting. After all of that work, you deserve to end the week on a high note: Self-Care Sunday! This is a celebratory way to mark each week by establishing and engaging in your favorite self-care routines. A splash of this, a breath of that!

Not sure you even remember how to relax? Are you wondering, “what does self care look like?” Let’s get you familiar with the freeing, relief-bringing practices and joys of taking extensive care of the self.

What is self care and why is it important?

This activity is the act of nourishing and treating yourself in ways that promote your health and wellbeing.

You might be wondering why self care is important. The answer is simple: you have one body, mind, and spirit. Despite the distractions and stress of day-to-day life, in order to remain in prime physical and emotional health, you must nourish yourself! Self care is not selfish, it is uplifting. Your ability to recognize your own needs, through a self assessment, and work to correct those needs is essential for building a happy, healthy life.

What are the different types of self care?

In its truest essence, taking a moment to take care of your deeper needs can take form in a whole number of different ways! Sometimes the best first step to identifying your own care and health promotion needs is by performing your own assessment.

Simply reflect on your life and ask yourself questions:

Are there any areas in your life that you feel are lacking? Maybe there is an area of neglect or stress you can identify. What is it that’s bothering you about yourself right now? Is there something you have been avoiding doing for yourself? You can then create a checklist, wish list, or vision board for areas you seek improvement in for your health. These needs can be fulfilled routinely (daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly) as self-care rituals or sprinkled in among your busy schedule as an epic treat-yourself day.

Three primary categories of self care include physical, emotional & spiritual, and group/social care.

Physical self care

What is it and who needs it?

Physical self care is the process of tending to the health of your physical body, either to make your physical body feel good and relax in the immediate future or long-term future.

Everyone needs physical self care, and it is so easy to partake in it: feeding your body, washing yourself and participating in hygienic daily routines, even readjusting your position when your leg falls asleep, or your muscles ache are examples of micro physical self-care activities.

While there are more intensive forms (like exercising daily or a 7-step skin care routine), even the littlest victories towards meeting your own physical self care should be celebrated. If you have a physically demanding job, or retain anxiety in your muscles, here are some hepful tips:

Emotional & spiritual self care

What is it and who needs it?

Emotional and spiritual self care entails of similar self-love but is done to tend to your mind and spirit rather than your physical form. To treat yourself spiritually, repeating mantras, seeking transcendence, listening to relaxing music or stories, or participating in a form of religion or community that uplifts you can be useful tips. This form of self-care will be most useful for those who’s been feeling lost in their life journey or having difficulty with appreciating their self-worth.

Emotional self care often encompasses identifying areas where you feel emotionally distraught or unfed and fixing those gaps. For example, if you feel stressed, you might need to participate in activities that bring you joy or calm you down. If you feel anger or grief, you might need to vent or feel affirmed. Check out a few ways you can find emotional and spiritual self care!
